The opportunity to launch the Parliament of Sustainable Fashion (PoSF) came at the Desktop Jam on November 16, 2022, where a 15-minute window allowed for an interactive visualisation of ongoing research. The goal was to engage closely with clothing, question common clothing practices, and infuse a playful touch into democratisation.
The name, "Parliament of Sustainable Fashion," was chosen as a nod to Latour's "Parliament of Things" and to encompass the large variety of sustainability practices.
Sixteen clothing items, including shoes and accessories, were thoughtfully selected to represent varied materials, producers, and lifecycles. For instance, two pairs of Dr. Marten boots, one leather and one vegan, highlight ethical debates in regard to animal cruelty and biodegradable materials.
The concept and central issue were then introduced, revolving around the contention as to which item epitomised sustainable fashion and deserved the role of speaker for upcoming parliamentary assemblies. Five minutes were allocated for quick reflection on the sustainable attributes of their garment, followed by an invitation to engage in a debate over which garment best represented sustainable fashion.
